The company says most of the cuts will be accomplished through early retirements, attrition and voluntary separation programs. However, Chrysler said involuntary layoffs will be considered if it fails to meet its targets. ---------------------------They're lovin it. Consumers helped bring McDonald's back to profitability. Supersize spending at the hamburger chain brought its quarterly earnings to just under $1.2 billion. The results appeared to ease some concerns that McDonald's will suffer by the slowdown in consumer spending.-------------------------Bill Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will pour $375 million into a global effort to cut smoking. The philanthropists, who have a combined worth of more than $70 billion, say the money will help efforts in developing countries where tobacco use is highest.
